Open Position: Academic Coordinator
The Outreach, Research Training and Minority Science Programs (MSP) in the School of Biological Sciences, University of California, Irvine (UCI), invites applications for the full-time position of Outreach Coordinator. MSP is funded by competitive federal grants to, 1)increase the retention, academic preparation, research training, academic excellence and interest of underrepresented minority (URM) community college, undergraduate and graduate students to pursue Ph.D. degrees and careers in biomedical research, 2) bring innovation to graduate and K-12 education by integrating investigation and experimentation conducted by UCI faculty and graduate students with teaching of Biology/Life Sciences and 3) build on existing relationships with intermediate and high schools, community colleges and other universities, to prepare prospective students for the undergraduate and graduate educational opportunities offered by the School.
Under the direction of the MSP Director and Associate Director, the incumbent coordinates activities to recruit, train, and advance the research career and professional development of program participants. The duties of the Academic Coordinator are primarily administrative. Acts as a main liaison between MSP and external partners to recruit participants, coordinate activities and evaluate the impact of interventions according to grants’ objectives. Program participants include K-12 teachers, community college students, community college faculty, undergraduate and graduate students from UCI and other institutions. External partners include community colleges, K-12 schools and other universities in US and abroad. Activities for teachers and graduate students include Summer Institutes, Saturday workshops, practical experience for graduate students in K-12 classrooms, the development of a GK-12 manual on teaching practices, a handbook on mentoring and a web-based repository to disseminate practices, lessons and laboratories developed by graduate students and teachers, and an annual symposium where graduate students present their experiences and developed materials. Activities for community college and undergraduates include informative sessions, faculty and student panels, career advice, visits to UCI laboratories, tutoring, workshops, seminars, journal clubs, progress report sessions, research training experiences in the laboratories of UCI faculty and research institutions abroad, a local symposium, presentation of papers at national conferences and an annual conference for prospective graduate students. Conducts informative sessions describing programs and non-credit workshops on research careers in biomedical sciences, transferring to UCI, how to prepare a CV, how to prepare a statement of purpose and the process to apply to PhD programs in biological and biomedical sciences. Collects and maintains data on participants’ progress (including career tracking) and institutional data. Assists with purchasing supplies, participant hiring, payments to participants, scheduling rooms, travel, preparation of budgets, projections and financial reports. Assists in the preparation of evaluation reports, progress reports and proposals.
REQUIREMENTS: Master’s degree and a minimum of 3 years of prior experience coordinating academic programs for at least two of the following constituents: K-12 teachers or students, graduate students, undergraduate students or community college students. Experience coordinating academic programs with Spanish speaking countries. Bilingual; able to communicate, both verbally and in writing, in Spanish.
Must have transportation and valid California Drivers License
Salary is commensurate with education and experience. The minimum starting annual salary for an Academic Coordinator is $44,400 plus benefits.
